Asthma

In a relatively short space of time, asthma has become one of the most serious health conditions around the world; this increase in cases is of concern because it is also affected rising numbers of children. For sufferers of asthma, this chronic condition is serious as they have difficulty breathing when their air passages react adversely to atmospheric and other allergens. Respiratory conditions affect the daily life of everyone who suffers with them and severe attacks can even lead to death.

There are ways to reduce the risks of attacks though by carefully monitoring the condition which is the responsibility of the asthma sufferer on a daily basis. The medical treatment given to patients will depend on the severity of their condition and will be one of three areas which are; preventing the attacks and then providing relief if they do occur, in addition to supplying medical treatment for serious attacks.

The first preventative treatment to be supplied to every sufferer is a Bronchodilator which can give relief from minor attacks. Many asthmatics will only ever need this form of medication. Other medication is available for asthma patients who have mild but frequent attacks like a mastcell stabilizer or leukotriene modifier and oral glucocorticoids for patients with a serious asthma condition. They will all still use a standard reliever as well.

After a period of time most asthmatics will have learned to recognize what events trigger the attacks. They will then be able to avoid these triggers and this should lessen if not completely stop the attacks. Medical science has now confirmed that the poorer the air quality the greater the chance that this and other respiratory problems will occur.

While the medications can sometimes help control the symptoms, they are often a temporary measure and do not address the root cause. Prescription drugs may also cause side effects such as fatigue, dizziness, depression, impotence, liver damage and more. More and more patients who suffer with a respiratory condition are choosing natural medicines that address the root cause, over pharmaceutical drugs that trick the body's immune response system.

The drugs used contain a catalyst which is designed to soothe and reduce the hyperactivity experienced by the body during an attack and thereby, strengthening it. The same effect is sought by the natural medications but by using organic ingredients that have no side-effects.

Now yoga is being used as a natural substitute to medication as some yoga disciplines are centered on breath control which many asthma sufferers are finding beneficial to their condition and overall well-being. Drugs can leave residues which complementary therapies do not and the immune system can be strengthened by nutritional supplements. Ultimately, the most important factor is the asthma patient learning to manage their own condition.

Alzheimers

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive, degenerative disorder that affects the brain; it is the most notable despite there being many other types of dementia that are age related. Affecting 10 percent of people over 65, Alzheimer's is a disease that causes a steady decline in memory; the ability to diagnose the problem however, has increased with an accuracy figure of approximately ninety percent. Discovered in 1906 by German physician Alois Alzheimer, the world's focus on this disease is only about 30 years old; even though it has been scientifically studied for many years, knowledge surrounding this disease is minimal.

According to studies, it is advancing age that is the greatest risk to developing Alzheimer's disease. Unfortunately, the person experiencing the early symptoms of Alzheimer's will know something is wrong but won't admit it to others or even to themselves.

Alzheimer's disease is currently treated exactly the same as other forms of dementia. Some drugs can now slow down and sometimes improve the symptoms but so far no treatment has been discovered that can cure the disorder. The three main medications currently approved by the Food and Drug Administration for treatments of Alzheimer's disease are: Donepezil, Tacrine, and Rivastigmine. They have been shown to improve the cognition by about six months.

A new drug Memantine is proving to be effective in slowing down the mental deterioration seen in patients in the later stages of the disease. It is normally given to those on Donepezil who are suffering moderate to severe Alzheimer's. The side effects of using Memantine are low, and it's the first drug shown to have an effect on the symptoms of moderate to severe cases. More than 80 percent of the Memantine excreted are unchanged by the kidneys.

Owing to an increase in the life expectancy of people living in the industrialized world, Alzheimer's disease has become a major health issue and is the fourth largest cause of death in the United States. Although contracting the disease is a tragedy, the cost of treatment and care for sufferers is causing economic vibrations. There is already 40 billion American dollars spent every year on treatment and this amount is set to rise. Another large body, the National Institute on Aging spent almost half of its yearly budget on Research into the condition with scientists worldwide looking for a treatment for the disease.

One of the few factors that you can change to alter your risk of developing dementia is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Although not full proven yet, researchers studying Alzheimer's patients have noticed that those who stay healthy and cheerful have slowed down the rate of decline. This disease is still almost exclusively and aging condition and incidences of younger victims are rare.

Cancer

Back in the early part of the 1990's a film called 'The Medicine Man' was released, a story that revolved around a research scientist who discovers the cure for cancer, only to lose it in a local disaster; fortunately there is a worldwide research program being carried out and it's just a matter of time. Although there are other more awful diseases, this one holds the crown at the moment because of how often it is diagnosed; a cure would bring a sigh of relief everywhere. The causes for cancer seem to be many but despite all the knowledge we gain, it is still almost impossible to know if or when a person will contract it.

If someone were to ask you what cancer was, would you be able to give them a definition like the one in this article? This is a disease where unhealthy cells grow, divide and then expand into other cells, often transferring to parts of the body using a method called metastasis.

The malignant property of cancer differentiates it from benign tumors which limit their growth and do not invade or metastasize. Some benign tumors, however, are capable of becoming malignant. It causes more deaths per population than any other illness and the older you get the more prone you are to contracting the disease; thirteen percent of people die from one of it's many strains every year around the world. Cancer is an abnormality in the body's cells and can be caused by a number of agents including carcinogens or poisons such as smoke, infectious agents or radiation.

For some people the problem lies not with any form of external poison although faults with their parents DNA or genetic makeup can result in a person being born with the diseased cells. It is still not fully understood why one person will contract the disease and another be free from it but it is believed that the interactions between any carcinogens and each person's particular DNA is complicated.

Research into the cause of cancer continues around the globe and is the disease most frequently studied on a regular basis. More knowledge is being acquired about cancer each year. Study, in general, helps us learn why one person is more susceptible to an illness than another. Ultimately, even if they don't find the cure for some time, this research may be able to tell us how to avoid contracting cancer in the first place.

It is now believed by many that the food we eat could be responsible for many cases. Even if this is not the case, what we eat does have an effect on our overall and long term health. Foods that could be a problem are Salt, sugar, saturated fat and cholesterol. Recent studies have shown that calcium received from dairy products can be harmful to men and could encourage the onset of prostate cancer.

Cancer does not seem to have preferences as it is able to invade just about every part of the human body and organs. The problem is that it can also be insidious and a person may have it for some time before it is diagnosed. Cures for many types have advanced in recent years and are more likely to be successful if the cancer is found in its early stages. Advancements in medical techniques mean that cancer in many cases can be treated and often completely cured; it is only a matter of time before a complete cure is discovered.

Back Pain

For many people who suffer with back pain, they live in constant agony; affecting almost every type of activity, only back pain relief medication seems to help for a while. While there are a host of prescription medications that help with pain relief, many are doing nothing more than masking the symptoms instead of tackling the underlying cause of the pain.

Many people with spinal problems become addicted to the medication that relieves the back pain but this should really be the responsibility of a doctor. The problem with the back is just how strong it is and at the same time how easily it can become damaged. Once spinal injury has occurred it can be a permanent condition, often caused by something as simple as bad posture.

Of course the most common way to injure your spine is by lifting heavy weights or lifting them incorrectly. Many people are now turning to other methods of gaining back pain relief which do not include the use of drugs. Stretching the back is often the simplest method of relief, stretching your back gently can relax your back muscles preventing them from becoming tense.

Some are finding relief using reflexology, an ancient type of alternative medical treatment. It uses the concept that certain areas of the body having corresponding areas on the feet which can benefit from massage. Reflexology can also help to improve the body's blood circulation and relax muscles.

Although acupuncture is an age old Chinese medical practice that has been used for thousands of years, it is only recently that the Western world has accepted it as an alternative form of back pain relief. Acupuncture works by releasing the 'chi' or energy flow that every living thing has. It can become clogged up when sickness is present; using thin needles placed into the body at specific points can free this energy. Like reflexology, acupuncture seems to be used by people who suffer with chronic conditions like back pain which requires relief.

The Chinese discipline of tai chi has also provided relief as it uses yoga like principles. It is far easier and much slower so there is less likelihood of further damage being caused. The most important aspect of tai chi is that almost anyone can participate as it uses gentle breathing exercises and techniques to help relax the body.

A good preventative form of back pain relief is to actually exercise more regularly. This not only conditions the back but is an excellent preventative measure.
